Þríhnúkagígur – A Journey into the Heart of a Volcano
Some experiences are simply impossible to describe.
Descending into Þríhnúkagígur, the only volcano in the world where visitors can enter the empty magma chamber, is one of them. It is a truly unique adventure and undoubtedly one of Iceland’s greatest natural wonders.

The journey begins with a scenic hike across the lava fields of the Bláfjöll area. At the base camp, you step onto an open elevator that slowly lowers you 120 metres (394 feet) into the volcano. As the daylight gradually fades, an entirely different world reveals itself.
Standing inside the vast magma chamber left me speechless. The sheer scale of the cavern, together with the incredible colours painted across the volcanic rock by minerals over thousands of years, creates a scene unlike anything I have ever experienced. No photograph can truly capture the feeling of standing inside the heart of a volcano.
The experience was made even better by an outstanding team. Our guide, Guðmundur Ingi, was knowledgeable, calm and professional, making everyone feel safe and welcome throughout the tour.
After the hike back, Pálmi Freyr greeted us with a hearty bowl of traditional Icelandic lamb soup. It was the perfect ending to an unforgettable day.
I’ve been fortunate to travel to many remarkable places, but this is one experience that will stay with me forever.
If you’re planning a trip to Iceland, put Þríhnúkagígur on your list. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime journey into the heart of a volcano.
